“Masquerade as Theatre in Francophonie: Africa, the Caribbean and France”: A Presentation by Dr. Ron Popenhagen

The France-Florida Institute is delighted to welcome Dr. Ron Popenhagen to the University of Florida on February 10, 2023 at 3pm in Library East (Smathers) Room 100 for a presentation “Masquerade as Theatre in Francophonie: Africa, the Caribbean and France” as a part of the 2022-2023 FFRI Theater Revival/Le renouveau théâtral project.
Dr. Ron Popenhagen is a director, actor and scholar with specializations in French Theatre History & Performance, as well as Baltic and Scandinavian Studies. Ron has published on Irish literature (Amsterdam UP) and French/German/Italian/Swiss actors and directors (Cambridge UP). In 2021, Edinburgh University Press published his monograph Modernist Disguise: Masquerade in Modern Performance and Visual Culture—released in paperback in 2022. The book features interdisciplinary commentary on Theatre and Art in European Modernism. Popenhagen has taught at the University of Kansas, USC (Los Angeles), Cal State Channel Islands & Cal State Northridge, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (Sydney), the Lithuanian Conservatory of Music & Drama (Vilnius) and Sydney University’s Conservatorium of Music.
Dr. Popenhagen holds a PhD from UC Santa Barbara, an MA from Stony Brook, Long Island (SUNY), and three diplômes from the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris—where he served as Lecoq’s Teaching Assistant for actor training and mise en scène. Ron has participated in National Endowment for the Humanities Interdisciplinary Seminars in association with Harvard University, Princeton University, UCLA, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee—including presentations on mask performance in Belfast, Douglas (Isle of Man), Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Paris. As a practitioner, Popenhagen has directed and acted in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Lithuania, Scotland, Turkey, and the U.S.
