As she lives near the Western Fromt she joins a group of French soldiers without too much trouble. But there’s something a bit odd about these stragglers, and it’s not just their habit of bursting into song at every opportunity.

Out of Africa: The Work of Memoirs in Contemporary Africa
This workshop considers memoirs as deeply political texts written in specific and critical contexts. While they are local in their production, they are distinctly transnational in their circulation. Memoirs represent crucial contributions to African ideas about memory, but at the same time, these memoirs have become critical to Western ways of understanding Africa in ways that often elide the complexities of contemporary Africa with the authority of personal memory.
The FFRI will sponsor the visit of Dr Leonard Wantchekon, Princeton University.

Dr. Catherine M. Jones is Professor of French and Provencal, University of Georgia.
She is the author of The Noble Merchant: Problems of Genre and Lineage in Hervis de Metz (North Carolina, 1993) and Philippe de Vigneulles and the Art of Prose Translation (Boydell & Brewer, 2008). She is a leading internationally recognized scholar on medieval epic.
She is the Vice-President and President of the Société Rencesvals, North-American Branch, and International Vice-President of the Société Rencesvals.
